The Mind is its own Place….

We are living in difficult times: politically, environmentally and socially.  The news spins fast and we’re all being pulled in many directions depending on what we are reading. However, despite all this the reality we each inhabit is not shaped by the world outside for it is  shaped in our own heads.  Our minds don’t just observe the ‘reality’ we are the interpreters, and how we interpret the world determines how we feel.

Two people can live through the same moment and come away with entirely different experiences. One sees chaos, the other sees possibilities. The facts might be the same but the meaning we give to them is not. This isn’t denying pain or ignore suffering. It is acknowledging that much of what we call reality is filtered through the lens of  our thoughts,  memory and our emotions.

That quote by Milton reminds us that the human mind has the capacity to transform meaning: our interpretation reframes our experience for good or for bad.   Our past can become a source of shame or it can be a source of strength.  The present challenges can break us or can cause us to grow; they can break us or build us.

These words can speak directly to us as serial crafters.   

Milton’s insight isn’t just philosophy; it’s a truth we live when we pick up a tool or reach for material. The mind is, quite literally, where everything begins. Every idea, every pattern, every brushstroke or stitch originates in that world between our ears!   It all starts with our inner vision.  Add to that what so many people recognise, that once involved in a project we create a sanctuary for ourselves.  Crafting can take imagination and give it form.  We can take scraps and make beauty.  We can turn accidents into features. We can mend torn clothes giving further life into them (I have been turning shirt collars lately: have you ever done that?!)

Yet I can guarantee there are times when you are not happy with your work for we are all self-critical, and the joy can be lost.  But our minds can change that.  We can choose to see failure as progress, change frustration into opportunity, and train our minds to be kinder to ourselves.

When you are crafting you are no longer making a piece – you are creating peace for yourself!
